It was an exciting finish to the 2015 Winter Indoor Soccer League at Columbus Event Center. Two out of three championship games went into extra time, and the remaining games on the day were close. And, our youngest soccer stars finished off their season with an extra week of games and medals for their work this session.

The first game of the day was our only playoff game for the Winter season. With only three teams in the Under 16 division, we needed a playoff game between the third place Yellow squad and second place Red team to set up the championship game against the blue team. Just one week earlier, this age division was a couple of goals away from seeing a three-way tie for first place amongst all three teams.

The Red team built an early lead, racing out to a 4-0 lead in less than six minutes of play. Yellow cut the lead in half by the eighth minute, but Red added four more goals later in the half to just one by Yellow for a 8-3 lead at the half. In the second half, Yellow had the upper hand, outscoring Red 6-3 to pull to within two goals. But, the clock ran out on the comeback attempt, and the red squad advanced to the finals. Yellow would finish the Winter season in third place.

Teams (record) 1st 2nd OT Final Scorers
Red U16 (5-4-0) 8 3 0 11 Gilberto Rodriguez (7), Olivia Fehringer (2), Devyn Glenn (2)
Yellow U16 (3-6-0) 3 6 0 9 Luis Neave (4), Armande Adame (2), Bryan Quiroga (2), Antonio Jimenez (1)

So, the championship game was finally set, with the Red and Blue teams playing for the Winter League title. As had been the case all season, this was a great game. Red got off to another quick start, leading 3-0 by the fifth minute of play. Blue got on the scoreboard three minutes later, and the two teams traded goals over the next ten minutes heading into the halftime break. At the half, Red was up, 5-2. In the second half, Blue did pick up an early goal to cut their deficit to just two. Eight minutes later, Red answered that goal to extend their lead back out to three. Blue would score back-to-back goals to pull to within one, but a quick answer from Red had them back up by two with less than two minutes left in the game. Blue continued to press on, scoring a goal with just under a minute to play. The pace was furious through the final seconds, and it paid off for the blue team, who netted the tying goal in the game's final seconds to tie the score at 7-7. The game headed to extra time, with 'Golden Goal' rules in effect (first to score wins). Two minutes into the extra period, the Red team was able to sneak behind the defense, take a clearing pass, and bury the shot for the gold medal.

Teams (record) 1st 2nd OT Final Scorers
Red U16 (6-4-0) 5 2 1 8 Devyn Glenn (4), Gilberto Rodriguez (2), Olivia Fehringer, Alex Larson
Blue U16 (5-4-0) 2 5 0 7 Eric Hanzel (4), Caleb Voichahoske (2), Alex Campos

The Under 12 age division took the court next, with Yellow hosting Black in the consolation game. Yellow scored two goals in the opening five minutes for an early 2-0 lead, but Black came back to even the score with two goals in two minutes. Following a go-ahead goal from Yellow, Black tied the game again. But, just seconds later, Yellow retook the lead, then added two more goals before half for a 6-3 lead at the break. In the second half, Yellow took control of the game, scoring five consecutive goals for an 11-3 lead late in the game. Black did find the back of the net twice in the 36th minute, but Yellow countered with one more goal just a minute later. At the final whistle, Yellow took home the bronze with a 12-6 defeat of Black.

Teams (record) 1st 2nd OT Final Scorers
Yellow U12 (4-3-0) 6 6 0 12 Alan Adame (5), Jairo Rodriguez (4), Frank Fehringer (3)
Black U12 (0-7-0) 3 3 0 6 Edgar Garcia (3), Anna Rodriguez, Meagan Ludena, Ted Fehringer

Heading into the Under 12 Division championship game, the Silver squad had yet to lose a game, while the Red team made it in by way of tiebreaker over the Yellow team following the regular season. This game was an even more exciting finish than our earlier championship game. The lone goal of the first half belonged to Red, and was scored midway through the first half. In the second half, the teams were able to start breaking through. Silver tied the game in the first minute of the second half. Red answered with two quick goals midway through the second to go up 3-1. Silver fired back quickly as well, pulling back to within one just seconds after the third Red team goal. Three minutes later, Silver tied the game at three goals a side. The game remained tied through the final whistle, sending this one into extra time. The first period of overtime was scoreless, so we headed into a second period of extra time to try to find a winner. Midway through the second overtime period, Red found the back of the net for the win, and the gold medal for the Winter season.

Teams (record) 1st 2nd OT Final Scorers
Silver U12 (6-1-0) 0 3 0 3 Jair Tovar (2), Jorge Tovar
Red U12 (4-3-0) 1 2 1 4 Israel Robledo (4)

Moving on to the Under 9 Division consolation game between the green and blue teams, we had an immediate problem. Only two players had shown up for Blue, leading to a forfeit of the game to Green who was awarded the bronze medal. But, since some player did show up (a third Blue player arrived midway through the game), we still played some soccer. Ultimately, the two teams played to a 5-5 tie to finish their Winter season.

Teams (record) 1st 2nd OT Final Scorers
Green U9 (3-3-1) 2 3 0 5 Juan Cantu (4), Brandon DeAnda
Blue U9 (0-6-1) 3 2 0 5 Coben Christensen, Shawn Ludena (sub)(4)

Which leads us to the final game of the Winter soccer season, the championship game between the Yellow and Red teams. In the regular season, only one win separated these two teams, so it was setting up to be a good game. Yellow came out shooting (and scoring), netting three goals in four minutes for an early 3-0 lead. Red answered with a goal of its own in the 7th minute, the final goal of the first half. At the break, Yellow was on top, 3-1. In the second half, Yellow rebuilt its three goal lead scoring five minutes into the half. Red answered quickly to pull back to within two, but a pair of Yellow goals extended their lead out to 6-3. Red continued to fight on, scoring a goal in the game's final minute, but it wouldn't be enough as the Yellow team won the gold medal with a 6-4 win over Red.

Teams (record) 1st 2nd OT Final Scorers
Yellow U9 (6-1-0) 3 3 0 6 Frank Fehringer (3), Marco Flores (2), Dylan Kay
Red U9 (4-3-0) 1 3 0 4 Ronald Acuna (2), Jordyn Trotta, Eli Kerkman
